6 of us went for a 24+km hike in the Monschau forest and village. It was really beautiful. It is about a 2 hour drive from here, we saw some huge windmills as power generators along the way. The village was picturesque, it looked like a scene out of Hansel and Gretal with tudor style dwellings some with thatched rooves. I saw my first castle in Europe, Monschau Castle, beautiful and rustic enough for me too. Unfortunately there seemed to be no foresight when installing the eyesores of electricity wires poles or signs. The contrast for me was stark between the ancient fortress that took decades to erect and the lack of care taken with speedily introduced base functions.
Another castle ruin stands guard on the hillside. .. it almost seemed to follow us throughout the village. And never far from where ever we were was a good sized river.
There was a lot of lovely natural flat rock around that was put to many a diverse and practical use. Couldn't help imagining how wonderful it would be to create great spaces with them back home with Simon!
3 of our group had an impromptu jam session along the way with a small guitar (no, not a ukulele ... it had 6 steel strings it only had the size of a ukulele) a harmonica and a wooden recorder.
